February 23 my new adventures

Hi, guys. How are you?

I was not be able to write my articles last week because I was so exhausted and did not time for it. At this moment I keep going to look for a job. It lasted almost 2 months since I started and right now I am frustrated, but I do not give up. Last week I went to the temporary agency in order to enlist a help, but this guys said me to translate and evaluate my diploma. Then come again, so I found a translator and on the next week I am getting my translation. After that I have to evaluate it.

What next? I gave up one my English course in Irvine Valley College and my volunteer job in Heritage library.  I had to since I was so tired at the end of day. Now I have 2 volunteer jobs: in the my son's school 2 days per week and in the CareChoices company where I do office work. Also I keep doing my 2 English classes: ESL class in Heritage library 2 days per week and ESL class in Katie Wheeler library 1 day per week.

I finished at last filling Tax return, and I was happy since I have never done it before. It seemed me so difficult at the beginning. I found good online application Turbotax and began to fill a form.

Almost at once I faced with problem of my son's SSN. He doesn't have it, but the Turbotax required it. So I began to google and found the decision to fill in another SSN and then after printing to erase it. I did it, printed form 1040, erased number and filled form W-7 to get ITIN. This number is needed only for Tax return in our case. I can send via mail my forms, but they demand the original passport of my son. I could not dare to sent passport. I called to the IRS to make an appointment and... my appointment on 14th March. It was too long to wait, so I decided to show up at the local office IRS: 801 Civic Center Drive W.Santa Ana, CA 92701 and gave away my documents. It didn't work. They accept only by appointment.

I wanted to mention about this more in detail. There was an awful day, hard cold rain, I was driving around this building about 20 minutes in order to find a parking place. I found one place and then I tried to pay for parking, but I could not realize how to pay: no automate only board with writing: Go to the site... put the number .... and pay through your phone. Oh my gosh, I was standing with my umbrella in one hand, and phone in the second hand, hard rain and wind, I was trying to sign up to the site and .... no connection ... my phone lost signal... final. After 15 minutes my attempts I gave up and drove to look for another place. I found parking place with barrier, I have never used such as kind of parking and of course, I was afraid that I could not connect the dots. But I could :). Then I walked under rain to the local office about 10 minutes and my umbrella didn't help me to stay dry. I came and was sent back. It was so disappointing. I didn't want to wait until March, after I picked up my son I ran to the H&R block accounting company. Paid 70$ for sending W-7 form to the IRS. But It wasn't the end. I will continue to tell about Tax return in my next article.

What about my education, I started new online course from Coursera Speak English Professionally: In Person, Online & On the Phone.  I put first video here.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.141
[MUSIC]
2
00:00:05.141 --> 00:00:07.150
Welcome to module one.
3
00:00:07.150 --> 00:00:10.642
In this module, you'll learn about and
practice speaking in person for
4
00:00:10.642 --> 00:00:14.590
making small talk to introducing
yourself professionally.
5
00:00:14.590 --> 00:00:18.290
A key component of this module is to
focus on pronunciation skills that will
6
00:00:18.290 --> 00:00:21.619
help you to become more fluent and
more confident when you speak English.
7
00:00:23.160 --> 00:00:25.560
First, let's look at small talk.
8
00:00:25.560 --> 00:00:27.210
Now, what is small talk?
9
00:00:28.480 --> 00:00:31.180
Small talk is how many
conversations begin.
10
00:00:31.180 --> 00:00:34.560
It's just short conversations
about every day topics, but
11
00:00:34.560 --> 00:00:37.730
those short conversations can lead
to longer and more important ones.
12
00:00:39.430 --> 00:00:43.300
And in the working world being able to
make small talk, feeling comfortable
13
00:00:43.300 --> 00:00:47.160
making small talk, often leads
to greater professional success.
14
00:00:47.160 --> 00:00:51.400
So that's why as you work on
becoming a better English speaker,
15
00:00:51.400 --> 00:00:54.490
you want to have many,
many small talk conversations.
16
00:00:55.870 --> 00:00:59.806
Small talk is where conversations begin,
but how do you start?
17
00:00:59.806 --> 00:01:01.942
And how do you keep
the conversation going?
18
00:01:01.942 --> 00:01:07.689
Take a minute and think about how you
begin conversations in your own language.
19
00:01:07.689 --> 00:01:09.484
What kind of greetings do you use?
20
00:01:09.484 --> 00:01:11.626
What do you talk about?
21
00:01:11.626 --> 00:01:13.746
While every conversation is different,
22
00:01:13.746 --> 00:01:16.476
you can probably think of
many ways they are the same.
23
00:01:16.476 --> 00:01:20.888
Opening lines, ways you introduce
yourself and things you talk about.
24
00:01:23.117 --> 00:01:24.649
It's the same in English.
25
00:01:24.649 --> 00:01:28.610
In this video, we're going to look at
examples of small talk conversations.
26
00:01:28.610 --> 00:01:32.978
We'll focus on key phrases to use to help
make small talk easier and more fun.
27
00:01:35.490 --> 00:01:40.802
First, let's look at how you can
introduce yourself to someone new.
28
00:01:40.802 --> 00:01:42.620
Hello, I'm Jody.
29
00:01:42.620 --> 00:01:43.999
What's your name?
30
00:01:43.999 --> 00:01:45.800
>> Hello, I'm Ben.
31
00:01:46.860 --> 00:01:48.000
>> Nice to meet you, Ben.
32
00:01:50.290 --> 00:01:51.370
>> Simple, right?
33
00:01:51.370 --> 00:01:52.682
Introductions are easy.
34
00:01:52.682 --> 00:01:54.760
And often,
when you introduce yourself first,
35
00:01:54.760 --> 00:01:58.310
it's makes the other person feel
more comfortable talking to you.
36
00:01:58.310 --> 00:02:00.310
And once you've heard the other
person's name, say it.
37
00:02:01.430 --> 00:02:02.620
Nice to meet you, Ben.
38
00:02:04.390 --> 00:02:07.846
It's welcoming and
it helps you to remember the new name.
39
00:02:07.846 --> 00:02:09.332
What's next?
40
00:02:09.332 --> 00:02:11.680
Make a connection and ask some questions.
41
00:02:13.570 --> 00:02:16.390
This is a great event, isn't it?
42
00:02:16.390 --> 00:02:17.663
What brings you here?
43
00:02:17.663 --> 00:02:20.356
>> I'm here for work and you?
44
00:02:20.356 --> 00:02:22.440
>> Me too.
45
00:02:22.440 --> 00:02:24.469
What kind of work do you do?
46
00:02:24.469 --> 00:02:29.960
>> Now that you've made a connection,
listen, listen and listen.
47
00:02:29.960 --> 00:02:32.363
Here's a chance to learn a little
bit more about the person.
48
00:02:32.363 --> 00:02:36.150
Find out what you have in common and
keep the conversation going.
49
00:02:36.150 --> 00:02:38.820
Smile and keep your eyes on
the person you're talking to.
50
00:02:40.090 --> 00:02:42.670
So, you're in technology?
51
00:02:42.670 --> 00:02:45.110
What do you think about my new phone?
52
00:02:45.110 --> 00:02:46.761
>> Wow, it's really great.
53
00:02:46.761 --> 00:02:49.170
I haven't seen one of those yet.
54
00:02:49.170 --> 00:02:50.660
>> You're right, it is great.
55
00:02:52.120 --> 00:02:55.280
Once you're comfortable with someone,
it's easy to keep the conversation going.
56
00:02:56.440 --> 00:02:59.120
What are some other
popular small talk topics?
57
00:02:59.120 --> 00:03:03.606
Hobbies, family, news,
sports, just to name a few.
58
00:03:03.606 --> 00:03:06.708
And remember,
the more detail you add to a conversation,
59
00:03:06.708 --> 00:03:08.940
the easier it is to keep it going.
60
00:03:08.940 --> 00:03:10.973
Don't just answer yes or no.
61
00:03:10.973 --> 00:03:14.187
And as you find yourself coming
to the end of a conversation,
62
00:03:14.187 --> 00:03:16.840
keep it going with a plan
to see that person again.
63
00:03:18.610 --> 00:03:21.156
Have you tried that new
restaurant across the street?
64
00:03:21.156 --> 00:03:24.420
>> No, but I've heard a lot about it.
65
00:03:24.420 --> 00:03:27.431
The chef is famous and
the food is delicious.
66
00:03:27.431 --> 00:03:29.770
>> I'd really like to try it.
67
00:03:29.770 --> 00:03:30.755
Want to join me?
68
00:03:34.800 --> 00:03:38.520
So, what do you need to do to
make your small talk meaningful?
69
00:03:38.520 --> 00:03:40.192
Introduce yourself.
70
00:03:40.192 --> 00:03:42.003
Ask questions.
71
00:03:42.003 --> 00:03:44.232
Be a good listener.
72
00:03:44.232 --> 00:03:49.467
Show your interest and find out what you,
and the other person have in common.
73
00:03:49.467 --> 00:03:52.570
Think of ways to extend the conversation.
74
00:03:52.570 --> 00:03:56.910
Small talk could be the start of
a new friendship, a new job and
75
00:03:56.910 --> 00:03:58.850
an interesting connection.
76
00:03:58.850 --> 00:04:01.801
Making small talk confidently
is a key skill and
77
00:04:01.801 --> 00:04:05.064
one I hope you'll practice and
enjoy more and more.
78
00:04:05.064 --> 00:04:09.594
